The St. Louis Cardinals are one of Major League Baseball’s most successful and storied franchises, with a rich history that spans more than 100 years. Based in St. Louis, Missouri, the team has earned a reputation for excellence, winning 11 World Series championships, the second-most in MLB history, behind only the New York Yankees. The Cardinals have been home to many legendary players and have built a legacy based on a strong tradition of baseball excellence, fan devotion, and community involvement.
The St. Louis Cardinals franchise traces its origins back to 1882 when it was founded as the St. Louis Brown Stockings in the American Association (AA), a major league at the time. The team was initially successful, winning the AA pennant in 1885 and 1886. In 1892, the franchise merged with the National League, adopting the name St. Louis Cardinals in 1900.
The Cardinals initially played at various stadiums in St. Louis but moved to Sportsman’s Park in 1920, which would be their home for several decades. In the early 1900s, the team struggled, but things began to improve in the 1920s with the arrival of new ownership and a focus on improving the talent on the roster.
The 1926 season marked a turning point for the St. Louis Cardinals, as they won their first World Series title under the management of Branch Rickey. The team’s gritty, hard-nosed style of play earned them the nickname the “Gashouse Gang”. With key players like Rogers Hornsby, Jim Bottomley, and Jess Haines, the team won the National League pennant and defeated the New York Yankees in the World Series, 4–3.
