Stephen Colbert, born on May 13, 1964, in Washington, D.C., is a celebrated American comedian, writer, actor, producer, and television host, best known for his satirical humor and quick wit. Colbert gained widespread fame through his role on The Daily Show and later as the host of The Colbert Report, where he created the character of a right-wing pundit, and currently hosts The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. His career, spanning nearly four decades, has established him as one of the most influential and respected voices in comedy and political satire.
Raised in Charleston, South Carolina, Colbert was the youngest of eleven children in a devout Catholic family. His early life was marked by tragedy when his father, James, and two of his older brothers were killed in a plane crash when Colbert was just 10 years old. This event profoundly affected him, and he found solace in humor and performing, which later became the driving force in his career. After high school, Colbert studied philosophy before transferring to Northwestern University, where he studied theater and discovered his passion for comedy.
Colbert began his career in comedy with the improvisational troupe Second City in Chicago, where he met future collaborators like Steve Carell and Amy Sedaris. This experience sharpened his comedic skills and led to television writing opportunities. In the 1990s, Colbert worked as a writer and performer on various shows, including Exit 57, The Dana Carvey Show, and Strangers with Candy, a cult comedy he co-created with Sedaris and Paul Dinello. These projects gave him early recognition as a versatile and daring comedic talent.
