Steve Wilkos, born on March 9, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois, is a television personality, former law enforcement officer, and former U.S. Marine best known for The Steve Wilkos Show, his daytime talk show that often tackles hard-hitting topics and social issues. Wilkos grew up in a working-class family on the north side of Chicago. After high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1982 to 1989, and was stationed in Japan, South Korea, and South Carolina, among other places. His time in the Marines helped shape his discipline, leadership, and no-nonsense approach to life.

Upon returning to civilian life, Wilkos joined the Chicago Police Department in 1990. He served as a police officer for over a decade, working in various roles and neighborhoods, including the tough 14th District of Chicago. It was during his time as a police officer that Wilkos began moonlighting as security for The Jerry Springer Show, a decision that would unexpectedly launch his career in television. His imposing presence and authoritative demeanor quickly made him a standout on the show, and he became a recognizable figure known for keeping order amid the often chaotic episodes.

Wilkos’s appearances on The Jerry Springer Show grew from a few security shifts into a more permanent role, with producers recognizing his natural charisma and unique ability to manage volatile situations. Soon, he became a fan favorite, appearing regularly and sometimes stepping in as a guest host. His popularity among viewers stemmed from his genuine, down-to-earth personality and his tough-yet-fair approach to handling the show’s frequent fights and heated disputes. His involvement with The Jerry Springer Show lasted until 2007 when he was offered the opportunity to host his talk show, The Steve Wilkos Show.
