The Texas Rangers are a professional baseball team based in Arlington, Texas, and are a member of Major League Baseball’s American League (AL). They play their home games at Globe Life Field, which opened in 2020 and are known for their passionate fanbase and significant moments in MLB history. The Rangers’ team colors are red, white, and blue, and they are part of the AL’s West Division.
The Texas Rangers were established in 1961 as the Washington Senators, an expansion team in Washington, D.C. The Senators were founded as a replacement for the original Washington Senators franchise, which had moved to Minnesota and became the Minnesota Twins. The new Senators franchise played in D.C. until 1971, when the team moved to Arlington, Texas, and became the Texas Rangers.
The move was part of an effort to bring Major League Baseball to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, which had been without a professional baseball team since the relocation of the St. Louis Browns (who became the Baltimore Orioles) in 1954. The franchise’s name, “Rangers,” was inspired by the historic Texas Rangers, the state’s law enforcement agency, which symbolizes the state’s spirit of independence and its wild frontier history.
The Rangers began their journey in Arlington with a mix of ups and downs. Their early years were marked by struggles, but the team quickly became a fixture in the sports landscape of Texas. The team’s first winning season came in 1964, and by the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Rangers had emerged as a competitive force in the AL West.
