Tom Chapman is a British musician, composer, and co-founder of the electronic music duo Hurts, known for its distinct blend of synth-pop, electronic, and new wave influences. Born on December 10, 1983, in Manchester, England, Chapman’s musical journey began at a young age, when he developed a deep interest in both classical and contemporary music. His formal education in music, combined with his passion for writing and producing, laid the foundation for his later success in the music industry.
Chapman’s early musical endeavors were marked by his involvement in various bands, but it was his collaboration with Theo Hutchcraft that led to the creation of Hurts in 2009. The duo’s sound quickly gained recognition for its lush, melancholic melodies and dramatic, emotionally charged lyrics, drawing comparisons to 1980s synth-pop and the grandiose production styles of artists like Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys.
Hurts debuted with their first album, Happiness, released in 2010. The album featured the hit singles “Wonderful Life” and “Stay,” both of which helped establish the band as one of the leading forces in the UK’s electronic music scene. “Wonderful Life,” in particular, became a global anthem for the band, known for its dark, cinematic sound and powerful delivery. Chapman’s role as a composer and producer was integral to the album’s polished production, combining a mix of haunting synths, rich orchestration, and catchy pop hooks.
Following the success of Happiness, Chapman and Hutchcraft continued to refine their sound with subsequent albums, including Exile (2013) and Surrender (2015). Each release saw the duo experimenting with different musical styles, expanding their sonic palette while retaining the melancholic and anthemic qualities that had made them stand out. Chapman’s work as a composer contributed significantly to the band’s evolving sound, with his ability to craft emotionally resonant and radio-friendly tracks becoming a defining feature of Hurt’s.
