The Washington Nationals are a Major League Baseball (MLB) team based in Washington, D.C., and are part of the National League (NL) East Division. The Nationals’ history is rich and complex, marked by several relocations, ownership changes, and moments of glory. Despite the challenges they faced early on, the Nationals have emerged as a competitive franchise in recent years, winning their first World Series in 2019, a crowning achievement for the team and the city of Washington, D.C.
The history of the Washington Nationals dates back to 1969 when the team was originally known as the Montreal Expos. The Expos were established as an expansion team in the late 1960s and became the first MLB franchise based outside the United States. The Expos played in Montreal, Quebec, for over three decades, and although they had some successful seasons, they never won a World Series. The franchise is perhaps most famous for its team in the early 1990s, which boasted future Hall of Famer Pedro Martínez and a young Larry Walker.
In 2004, after years of financial difficulties and underperformance, Major League Baseball decided to relocate the Expos due to the franchise’s challenges, and the team was moved to Washington, D.C. The team was officially renamed the Washington Nationals, returning MLB to the nation’s capital after the Washington Senators franchise had relocated in 1971. The Nationals began their inaugural season in Washington, D.C., in 2005, with high hopes but faced immediate challenges in terms of both performance and fan base support.
