Bob Johnson (born Robert L. Johnson on April 8, 1946, in Hickory, Mississippi) is a pioneering American businessman, media mogul, and philanthropist best known for founding Black Entertainment Television (BET), the first major television network dedicated to African American culture and entertainment. His innovative vision and business acumen helped transform BET into a multi-billion dollar enterprise, and he remains one of the most influential African American entrepreneurs in history.

Bob Johnson was born and raised in Hickory, Mississippi, in a family that valued education and hard work. His early life was shaped by the challenges of the segregated South, where he experienced firsthand the racial inequalities that would later inform his career. Johnson’s academic potential was clear from an early age, and he went on to attend Jackson State University, where he earned a degree in Social Studies. After completing his undergraduate studies, Johnson pursued a graduate degree in International Affairs at Princeton University, where he earned a Master’s degree in the field.

After graduating from Princeton, Bob Johnson embarked on a career in television and media. In the mid-1970s, he joined the National Cable Television Association (NCTA), where he worked as a lobbyist. While in the cable industry, Johnson recognized a significant gap in the television market—a lack of programming specifically targeted at African American audiences. This realization led him to found Black Entertainment Television (BET) in 1980.

Initially, BET was a cable network offering music videos, entertainment news, and cultural programming for African Americans. Johnson’s goal was to provide a platform that represented the African American community and allowed them to see themselves in media. The network quickly gained popularity among black audiences, offering a space for their voices, stories, and artists. BET’s programming was diverse and inclusive, encompassing music, comedy, drama, and news, much of which was designed to highlight African American culture in a way mainstream networks had not.
