Geraldine Keams spent her childhood in Arizona, on a Navajo Nation reservation. The rich cultural traditions of her village prompted her to develop a penchant for storytelling and performing as she grew up. The significance of representation was clear to Keams, and she set out to become an actress so that more people could hear Indigenous experiences.

Keams made her acting debut in the 1972 TV movie “The Manhunter” and continued throughout the 1970s. The 1976 Clint Eastwood Western “The Outlaw Josey Wales” (1976)—in which she starred as Black Shawl—made her a household name. Her acting chops and range were on full display in her role as Chief Ten Bears’s wife, Black Shawl.

Keams had several film and television roles in the ’70s and ’80s, often giving nuanced and convincing performances as Indigenous characters. She became even more of a household name after starring in films like “War Party” (1988) and “The Return of a Man Called Horse” (1976).

Keams stood out in Hollywood for her dedication to portraying Indigenous peoples in a good and complex way. She defied preconceptions and promoted cross-cultural understanding by bringing honesty and grace to her roles.
