William “Iam” Guy Tongi is a singer who won American Idol season 21. He was born on September 1, 2004. He breaks records as the first non-country performer to win in three years, the first Hawaiian, and the first Pacific Islander. Not only that but he was born after the show’s launch on June 11, 2002, making him the first winner to do so.

Tongi, the fifth grader and youngest of five siblings, picked up the ukulele. After spending his Christmas income on a guitar, his father gave it to him as a present when he was thirteen years old. Throughout his time on American Idol, Tongi would play guitar for the vast majority of his performances.

Tongi did not make it beyond the first round of American Idol’s auditions for Season 20. His mom went ahead and registered him for the Season 21 auditions without notifying him. Tongi, on the other hand, was hesitant to try out again, claiming that his negative attitude stemmed from his prior rejection and that he wouldn’t even make it beyond the audition stage.

On this occasion, however, he had the opportunity to perform for the show’s judges—Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan. Tongi joked about being “priced out of paradise” and having to relocate to Washington during the audition. Tongi broke down in tears when asked about his father, Rodney, who had died a few months before the audition; Tongi credited Rodney with introducing him to music.

Keeping his trip from coming across as a sad narrative was Tongi’s initial intention when he decided not to bring up his dad. The three judges gave Tongi a standing ovation and sent him to the next round when he sang a cover of “Monsters” by James Blunt, a song he had dedicated to his dad.
