Outside of his time playing in the MLB, Jay Payton is best known as a former professional baseball player. Payton had a fruitful career in Major League Baseball for more than ten years after being born in Zanesville, Ohio, on November 22, 1972. A detailed biography of his career is available here:

In Ohio, Jay Payton played varsity sports on the football, basketball, and baseball teams at Zanesville High School. Many collegiate baseball institutions courted him, but he decided to play for Georgia Tech. When Payton was a Yellow Jacket, he helped lead the team to the College World Series and became one of the best outfielders in college baseball. He was also named to the All-American team.

The New York Mets picked Jay Payton, the 29th overall pick in the 1994 Major League Baseball Draft, in the first round of the draft. His speed, defense, and hitting prowess propelled him up the Mets’ minor league system in no time. There was a 1998 promotion to the majors for Payton after he had a stellar minor league career.

On September 14, 1998, Payton debuted in Major League Baseball with the New York Mets. He was named fifth-best rookie in the National League after a strong first season. Among Payton’s many accomplishments, his aggressive play style, superb defense, and clutch hitting stood out.
