The American right-handed pitcher Roland Frank Sheldon made 160 appearances for the Major League Baseball during the 1961–1962, 1964–1966, and 1965–1967 seasons. He was born on December 17, 1936. He went to school at UConn after being born in Putnam, Connecticut. His measurements were 185 pounds (84 kg) and 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 m) in height.

At the age of 23, the New York Yankees signed Sheldon after he had played one season of baseball and basketball at UConn, spent a semester at Texas A&M, and served four years in the US Air Force. In his first professional campaign, 1960.

Sheldon pitched in the Class D New York-Pennsylvania League and had a winning percentage of.938 with 15 complete games. According to Ball Four, Sheldon lied to the Yankees about his age when he joined them; he was 26 years old, having spent three years in the U.S. Air Force and played three years of college.

After making the 1961 Yankees’ varsity roster out of spring training, he made it through the May cut down from 28 to 25 players and appeared in July and August as a starting pitcher for the Bombers. He shut out the Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox in consecutive games on July 5 and July 9, respectively.
