Born on January 18, 1958, Jeffrey Nels Williams is a former US Army officer and astronaut who worked for NASA. Until his colleague Peggy Whitson beat him in April 2017, he was the American record holder for the most days spent in space. He has been on four space trips.

He remains the only American guy to have spent more time in space than him. Williams spent his childhood in Winter, Wisconsin, after being born in Superior. Williams was the third-highest ranking Boy Scout in the United States when he was a kid, having achieved the rank of Star Scout.

From his perch on the International Space Station, he spoke with Boy Scouts at the National Scouting Museum in Texas during the 2009 Jamboree in the Air. In 1976, Williams completed his high school education in Winter, Wisconsin, at Winter High School. In 1980, he received his commission in the United States Army after graduating with a degree in applied science and engineering from the United States Military Academy.

Before becoming a test pilot, Williams spent 1987 to 1992 serving with the Army at Johnson Space Center. He applied to be an astronaut for NASA in 1996. Williams oversaw the NEEMO 3 mission in July 2002 while stationed at the Aquarius underwater laboratory, where he spent six days submerged underwater.
