Many consider retired American football wide receiver Lance Alworth, better known by his nickname “Bambi,” to be among the game’s all-time greats. His influence on football goes much beyond his statistical contributions; he entered this world on August 3, 1940, in Houston, Texas.

Alworth was a football player for the Razorbacks when he was a student at the University of Arkansas. He became famous as an outstanding athlete shortly after, being named to the All-American football and track and field teams. Pro scouts saw his lightning quickness, nimble footwork, and spectacular receiving skills, and the San Francisco 49ers picked him in the 1962 NFL Draft.

But Alworth was at his best in the American Football League (AFL). The San Diego Chargers were the team with which he spent most of his career and had the most success after trading with them in 1962 after a short run with the Oakland Raiders.

One of the most feared wide receivers of his day, Alworth was known for his speed, route running, and hands. His spectacular receptions and breakaway runs would often leave opponents trailing behind. His performance was so groundbreaking at wide receiver that it became the norm for years to come.
