Born on June 30, 1985, in Baltimore, Maryland, Michael Phelps is a former Olympic swimmer considered one of the best athletes in Olympic history. In a phenomenal career spanning many Olympics, Phelps won unprecedented gold medals and established many records.

Phelps was the youngest male American swimmer to join the U.S. Olympic squad in 68 years when he qualified at 15 for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. But in 2004, at the Olympic Games in Athens, when he won eight medals (six gold and two bronze), he became a household name as a swimmer.
