Corpus Christi, Texas was the site of Raymond Emmett Berry Jr.’s birth on February 27, 1933. He came from an athletic family; Raymond Berry Sr. was a well-regarded high school football coach, and he was born into it. Berry had a tough childhood despite coming from a long line of athletes. His vision problems and back pain made it hard for him to perform at his athletic best.

Berry went to Paris High School in Paris, TX, and played football there, albeit he wasn’t very good. He then attended Dallas, Texas’s Southern Methodist University (SMU) and became a backup quarterback.
