Sonny Jackson, born on July 9, 1944, in Washington, D.C., is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) shortstop and outfielder whose career spanned the 1960s and 1970s. Known for his agility, speed, and defensive skills, Jackson spent most of his MLB career with the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves. A talented shortstop with a remarkable presence on the field, Jackson became a fan favorite for his defensive abilities, as well as his contributions as a consistent leadoff hitter during his peak seasons.
Jackson’s professional career began when he was signed by the Houston Colt .45s in 1963, a team that would later become the Houston Astros. His minor league performance quickly drew attention as he showcased impressive base-stealing abilities and a knack for getting on base. Jackson made his MLB debut with the Astros on September 27, 1963, at just 19 years old. Though he played only a handful of games in his debut year, Jackson’s potential was evident, and the Astros saw him as a promising future talent.
The 1966 season marked Jackson’s breakout year. At just 22 years old, he became the Astros’ starting shortstop and made an immediate impact in the lineup. Known for his speed, he led the National League in stolen bases with 49 that season, an impressive feat for a rookie. Jackson also posted a respectable .292 batting average, demonstrating his capability as both a reliable hitter and a base-running threat. His efforts earned him second place in the 1966 NL Rookie of the Year voting, solidifying his place as one of the most exciting young players in baseball at the time.
