White spent his childhood in Kent, Ohio, after being born in Dover. White was a student at Roosevelt High. When he played in the football, basketball, and baseball state all-star games, he became the first Ohio high school athlete to do so.

When he was a senior in high school, he played catcher for the baseball team and had a 0.467 batting percentage. He also made first-team All-State in football twice, basketball (when he averaged 25 points per game), and baseball (when he won a championship game while pitching and had 17 strikeouts).

In addition to kicking field goals and extra points, he also recorded two touchdowns, a two-point conversion, and a safety by tackling the quarterback in the end zone. He was a four-year starter at Roosevelt, where 10 players (six of whom went on to play in the NFL) split time between offense and defense. Upon finishing college in 1968, White passed the exam.

White was named to the All-Big Ten and All-American teams while playing college football at Ohio State. In addition to basketball and baseball, he attended Ohio State. Upon his departure from Ohio State, he held the mark for most tackles in a game (1970 vs Michigan State), tackles in a season (1970), and tackles in a career. He also had the record for most extra points kicked in a season for a short period (1969).

In 1973, White scored a touchdown for the Colts off of an interception return by Dan Pastorini against the Houston Oilers. In 1975, he scored a touchdown against the New York Giants off of an interception return by Craig Morton. Both scores were from interception returns. He earned 1977 UPI First Team All-AFC honors as a linebacker.

With 34 interceptions in his career, White ranks second all-time among linebackers and still owns the NFL record for most interceptions in a season (1975). With 49 career interceptions, he trails just Ray Lewis and Jack Ham in linebacker career takeaways. He made the Baltimore Colts’ All-Time Team as a linebacker.
