Emmitt Perry Jr. (known professionally as Tyler Perry) was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on September 13, 1969. He is an accomplished American dramatist, filmmaker, actor, and entrepreneur. The theater, cinema, and television industries benefitted greatly from Perry’s work, but he is most remembered for his contributions to the entertainment industry.

In the 1990s, Tyler Perry became a playwright because he portrayed Mabel “Madea” Simmons, a feisty and outspoken old lady, in the “Madea” series. Perry often combines dramatic tension with comedic and socially conscious elements of his plays.

Madea has been in many of Tyler Perry’s popular films since he switched to filmmaking. The movies “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” “Madea’s Family Reunion,” and “Why I Got Married” are all worth seeing.

Perry’s reach as a media tycoon has grown with his acting and directing careers. He started Tyler Perry Studios, a major studio that has produced hit shows, including “The Haves and the Have Nots” and “If Loving You Is Wrong.”

For his work in the entertainment sector, Tyler Perry has been honored with several accolades, including the BET Honors and the Governor’s Award at the upcoming 2020 Primetime Emmys.
