U.S. attorney and former TV actress Wendy Kilbourne Read was born on June 29, 1964, in Los Angeles. Kilbourne took the lead in the miniseries “North and South” (which aired from 1985 to 1994) and the NBC series “Midnight Caller” (1988–1991) as Devon King, two of her most famous performances.

It was in the early ’80s that Kilbourne got his acting start. Many popular TV shows featured her, such as “Dynasty,” “The A-Team,” “Knight Rider,” “Matt Houston,” and “Murder, She Wrote.” Her performance as Constance Hazard in the Civil War drama “North and South” was memorable, and it was on set that she met her future husband, James Read. A boy, Jackson, was born in 1990, and two girls, Willa (stillborn in 1994) and Sydney (born 1995), are the offspring of the couple’s 1988 marriage.

Kilbourne opted to forego a career in acting in the mid-1990s in favor of studying law. She devoted herself to community service and legal practice after becoming a certified attorney. She established the residential charter school The Children’s Project of Santa Barbara to help children in foster care and serves as its chief executive officer.
