Milwaukee, Wisconsin is the site of Bud Selig’s birth on July 30, 1934. His undergraduate degree is in political science and American history from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Selig’s foray into baseball started in the 1970s, when he bought the Seattle Pilots, a failing team, and moved them to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they are now known as the Brewers.

He was the team’s chief executive and owner for more than 20 years. Selig succeeded Fay Vincent as Major League Baseball’s temporary commissioner in 1992. From 1998 to 2015, he was formally designated Commissioner. Selig supervised many major improvements and advances during his tenure as commissioner of baseball, such as the sport’s growth, realignment, revenue-sharing programs, interleague play, and the introduction of the Wild Card playoff system.

The Major League Baseball Players Association and Selig were heavily involved in the labor discussions. He oversaw the talks for many CBAs, the most notable of which was the 2002 landmark that prevented a strike and set standards for revenue sharing and competitive balance.

The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (now called the Tampa Bay Rays) were both added to Major League Baseball when Selig was commissioner. To make room for the additional clubs, as well as to streamline scheduling and transportation, he also managed the league and division realignments.
