American singer-songwriter, actor, and record producer Erykah Badu was born Erica Abi Wright in Dallas, Texas on February 26, 1971. Badu has permanently altered the course of music with her groundbreaking fusion of soul, jazz, funk, and hip-hop; she is famous for her unique voice, diversified style, and deep lyrics.

It was no surprise that Badu, who came from a long line of artists, showed talent for singing and performing at a young age. She refined her singing and musical abilities at Dallas’s Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Badu created a distinctive and difficult-to-classify singing style by drawing inspiration from a wide range of musicians, such as Billie Holiday, Chaka Khan, and Marvin Gaye in particular.
