The squad joined the Anaheim Mighty Ducks as an expansion franchise in 1993. We named our squad “Panthers” since there are so many endangered Florida panthers in the Sunshine State. The BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida (a Fort Lauderdale suburb) is where the club plays its home games.

Similar to most expansion clubs, the Panthers had a rough start. Nevertheless, they rose to prominence in 1995–1996 and, astonishingly, made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in their third season, losing a tough series to the Colorado Avalanche. The unexpected victory further cemented the team’s position in Florida’s sports scene.

There have been high points and low points for the Panthers throughout their existence. They have made it to the Stanley Cup playoffs many times, with particularly impressive runs in 2012 and 2016. Despite this, they have failed to achieve regular success and have gone through many coaching changes and team overhauls in search of long-term competitiveness.

Aleksander Barkov, Pavel Bure, John Vanbiesbrouck, Roberto Luongo, Olli Jokinen, and the Panthers have produced several outstanding players over the years. Among them, Barkov has become a franchise player, a top-tier center in the league, and a multiple-time All-Star. He has also served as team captain.
