Larry Seiple is a former American football punter and wide receiver who played for the Miami Dolphins in the NFL. He is primarily known for his unique versatility on the field. Born on February 14, 1945, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Seiple attended the University of Kentucky, where he was a standout player before joining the Dolphins in 1967. He played his entire 11-season professional career with Miami, spanning from 1967 to 1977.
Seiple was not just a punter; he also played wide receiver and running back, embodying a rare dual role in an era when such flexibility was uncommon. He is best remembered for his pivotal fake punt play in the 1972 AFC Championship Game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which helped secure the Dolphins’ undefeated season that year and led to their Super Bowl VII victory. Known for his athleticism and strategic acumen, Seiple’s play contributed significantly to Miami’s “No-Name Defense” and to the team’s strong overall performance.
After retiring as a player, Seiple went on to coach, bringing his deep knowledge of the game to various coaching roles in the NFL, including positions with the Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Detroit Lions.
