Sandy Koufax was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and he showed remarkable baseball aptitude at an early age. Professional scouts took notice of him during his time at Lafayette High School, where he was a standout pitcher.

After signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954, Koufax didn’t play in Major League Baseball until 1955. With the help of Dodgers pitching coach Joe Becker, he overcame his control problems and inconsistencies and began to throw more consistently.

Koufax became one of baseball’s most dominating pitchers in the early 1960s when he had his breakthrough. Batters had a hard time catching up to him because of his lethal curveball and overwhelming fastball. While Koufax was a pitcher, he won the Triple Crown in 1963, 1965, and 1966 by topping the league in victories, strikeouts, and earned run average.

Koufax set a plethora of records and received a slew of honors over his 12-year Major League Baseball career, which he spent entirely with the Dodgers club in Brooklyn and Los Angeles. In addition to being voted the National League MVP in 1963, he was a six-time All-Star and winner of three Cy Young Awards (1963, 1965, and 1966).
