New York City is where Kareem Abdul-Jabbar spent his formative years. He was already a promising star as a young basketball player when he started playing the game. At a towering 7 feet 2 inches in height, Abdul-Jabbar was incredibly athletic and talented. Abdul-Jabbar played basketball for the UCLA Bruins under the tutelage of famed coach John Wooden when he was a student there.

Abdul-Jabbar became one of the all-time greats in college basketball during his three years there, from 1966 to 1969. He was the Bruins’ go-to guy for three straight NCAA titles and a unanimous selection as the tournament’s MVP. Among Abdul-Jabbar’s many individual honors are three straight titles as Naismith College Player of the Year.

In 1969, the Milwaukee Bucks selected Abdul-Jabbar as the first overall choice in the NBA Draft. He was named the NBA’s Rookie of the Year after making an early impression in his first season. He was the driving force behind the 1971 NBA Finals, the Bucks’ only title.

The Los Angeles Lakers acquired Abdul-Jabbar in a trade in 1975, and he spent much of his NBA career with them. He maintained his dominance and won several honors, including six NBA MVP trophies. Because of his height and talent, Abdul-Jabbar was able to consistently land his trademark skyhook, a shot that almost no defense could withstand.
