Former German national ice hockey team coach and former professional hockey defenseman Uwe Gerd Krupp was born on June 24, 1965, in Germany. As one of the all-time greats from Germany, he made history as the second player from his country to win the Stanley Cup and the second professional from Germany to participate in an NHL All-Star Game.

After growing up in Germany, Krupp came to the United States as a young but seasoned professional. Against the Florida Panthers in Game 4 of the 1996 Stanley Cup Finals, Krupp scored the goal that clinched the cup in triple overtime. Krupp was the head coach of Kölner Haie until he retired. Björn Krupp, his son, plays ice hockey professionally.

As of 2017, Krupp was a member of both the IIHF and the German Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. Before making his NHL debut against the Montreal Canadiens, he played the rest of the season with the American Hockey League’s Rochester Americans, a club that went on to win the Calder Cup.
