Riverside, California, USA is the site of J.F. Lawton’s birth on August 11, 1960. His early exposure to great literature and cinema sparked a lifelong interest in narrative and filmmaking. Lawton went to CalArts, an arts institution in California, to study cinema and theater after finishing high school there.

Once J.F. Lawton finished school, he dove headfirst into a career in the entertainment business, writing screenplays and plays. He got his start writing for indie films and stage shows, where he sharpened his skills before breaking into the big leagues.

J.F. Lawton’s script for Garry Marshall’s 1990 romantic comedy “Pretty Woman”—which starred Julia Roberts and Richard Gere—was a smashing success. In addition to garnering Lawton a nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards, the picture became one of the highest-grossing romantic comedies of all time and was critically and commercially acclaimed.
