Jim Kaat came into this world in Zeeland, Michigan, on November 7, 1938. His athletic prowess was on full display throughout his time at Zeeland High School. After receiving heavy interest from professional baseball clubs, Kaat forewent his undergraduate education in 1957 to join the Washington Senators, a team that would eventually become the Minnesota Twins.

When Jim Kaat was twenty years old in 1959, he debuted in Major League Baseball with the Washington Senators. His prowess as a pitcher became immediately apparent, and he became famous for his control, durability, and ground ball induction abilities. For most of his career, Kaat was a dependable starter for the Minnesota Twins.

Among Kaat’s 25 years in Major League Baseball, you’ll find stops with the St. Louis Cardinals, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Chicago White Sox, and the New York Yankees. His longevity was legendary; he continued throwing well into his forties and accumulated more than 4,500 innings.

Among Kaat’s many honors as a player were three All-Star nods and sixteen Gold Glove Awards for his outstanding pitching defense. In 1966, he was named the American League ERA champion and in both 1966 and 1974, he was the league’s leading winger.
