Based out of Nashville, Tennessee, Lady A came together in 2006. Dave Haywood, Hillary Scott, and Charles Kelley were the original members of the trio. Due to their shared musical heritage, Scott and Kelley had known one other since they were little children. When they were both students at Nashville’s Belmont University, they met Haywood.

They got their moniker, Lady Antebellum, after the antebellum mansion where they had their initial group portraits taken. As a result of increased knowledge of racial problems and the connotations of the word “antebellum,” the band revealed in June 2020 that they were changing their name to Lady A, a moniker that had become popular among fans.

“Lady Antebellum,” Lady A’s 2008 self-titled first album, was a game-changer. “Love Don’t Live Here” and “I Run to You,” two of the album’s songs, were number-one hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs list. They became famous as audiences responded to their soulful harmonies, infectious tunes, and sympathetic lyrics.

“Need You Now” (2010) and “Own the Night” (2011) were subsequent albums that helped Lady A cement her popularity even further. The lead single “Need You Now” peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the country charts, solidifying its status as a huge crossover smash. Record of the Year and Song of the Year were among the many Grammys bestowed to the band by the song.
