A former Major League Baseball pitcher, Rick Gerald Austin came into this world on October 27, 1946. From 1970 until 1976, he spent time in the bullpen. Austin was a member of the 1967 and 1968 Washington State University Cougars baseball teams. He threw a perfect game on March 22, 1968, against Gonzaga University.

The Cleveland Indians selected him in the first round of the secondary round of the 1968 Major League Baseball Draft. He started his professional career with the AA Waterbury Indians. Austin divided 1969 between the Portland Beavers and Waterbury, the Indians’ rookie squad, after posting an ERA of 2.73 and a record of 1-8 in 1968.

In 16 games with the Trail Blazers, he was 5-6 with a 3.66 ERA. Two of the Indians’ most promising pitching prospects were Rich Hand and him after the season. Austin made his big league debut that year after starting six games for the Wichita Aeros in 1970. He started the season on June 21 and appeared in 31 games, with a 2-5 record and a 4.79 ERA.

His 5.09 earned run average in 23 games the next season led to his recall to Wichita for the rest of the season. The Milwaukee Brewers signed him after the Indians dismissed him midway through the 1973 season; he played the rest of the year with the Evansville Triplets. Austin relocated to Japan in 1974 and played baseball for the Nippon Professional Baseball team, the Hankyu Braves.
