Brockton, Massachusetts is the site of Steve Balboni’s birth on January 16, 1957. In Everett, Massachusetts, he was a baseball star at Pope John XXIII High School. While a student at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, Balboni maintained his baseball career.

Professional scouts took notice of him when he stood out on the baseball squad for the Eckerd Tritons. The New York Yankees selected Balboni in the 1978 Major League Baseball Draft, the second round of the draft. He debuted in Major League Baseball in 1981 with the New York Yankees and spent several seasons there, mostly playing first base and designated hitter.

Perhaps Balboni’s tenure with the Royals is the most well-known aspect of his career. The Royals acquired him in a trade in 1984, and he was an integral part of their 1980s championship run. The Royals won the World Series in 1985 with Balboni’s aid, because of his strong fielding and power hitting. Balboni had extraordinary power at the bat throughout his career.
