An American citizen, Timothy Michael Dolan came into this world in St. Louis, Missouri, on February 6, 1950. Attending Holy Infant Grade School and St. Louis Preparatory Seminary South, he grew up in a very religious Catholic home. Dolan continued his education at Cardinal Glennon College and the Pontifical North American College in Rome, where he received a Licentiate in Sacred Theology degree from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum).

On June 19, 1976, for the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Dolan was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Edwin O’Hara. Right after he was ordained, he was a parish priest. Then he went on to get a Ph.D. in sacred theology from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Dolan was conferred the title of Auxiliary Bishop of St. Louis in 2001 by Pope John Paul II. Consecrated as a bishop on June 19, 2001, by Archbishop Justin Rigali. Dolan was an auxiliary bishop until Pope John Paul II named him archbishop of Milwaukee in 2002. Dolan became well-known in Milwaukee as an enthusiastic and inspiring leader who was dedicated to social justice causes and had a contagious smile.

Cardinal Edward Egan was succeeded by Dolan in 2009 as the tenth Archbishop of New York by Pope Benedict XVI. Dolan rose to prominence as archbishop of New York, becoming a U.S. Catholic leader renowned for his media engagement and tireless promotion of Catholic causes.
