A native of Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China, Donnie Yen came into this world on July 27, 1963. Along with his family, he relocated to Hong Kong when he was very little. The martial artist and Tai Chi grandmaster Bow-sim Mark was Yen’s mother, and the newspaper journalist Klyster Yen was his father. Starting when he was four years old, Yen studied Tai Chi, Taekwondo, Wushu, and other martial arts under his mother’s tutelage.

When he was younger, Yen won a slew of wushu tournament trophies because of his exceptional martial arts abilities. His career in Hong Kong movies started in the 1980s while he was working as an action choreographer and stuntman. The early films of Yen included martial arts demonstrations in “Drunken Tai Chi” (1984) and “Tiger Cage” (1988), among others.

Yen and Jet Li’s breakout performance as General Nap-lan in 1992’s “Once Upon a Time in China II” brought Yen immense fame. His impressive martial arts abilities and command of the film helped him get a high-profile role, and he quickly rose to stardom.

From “Iron Monkey” (1993) to “Flash Point” (2007) and the “Ip Man” series (2008-2019), in which he played the renowned Wing Chun master Ip Man, Yen had a string of hit action flicks in the ’90s and ’00s. For Yen, the “Ip Man” films were the ones that set him out as a top martial arts performer on a global scale.
