Lee Edward Lacy came into this world in Longview, Texas, USA, on April 10, 1948. He was a star athlete at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, California, where he played football and baseball among other sports. Scouts took notice of Lacy’s athletic ability, and the St. Louis Cardinals picked him up in the second round of the 1969 Major League Baseball Draft.

On September 11, 1972, Lacy debuted in Major League Baseball with the Baltimore Orioles. He was a versatile utility player who played five years with the Orioles, mostly infield and outfield. The squad benefited greatly from Lacy’s contributions because of his flexibility and dependability at the plate.

The Pittsburgh Pirates traded for Lacy in 1976, and he had his best years as a player after that. During his tenure with the Pirates (from 1976 to 1981), he was a dependable outfielder and an integral part of the team’s success. A formidable offensive threat, Lacy was lightning fast on the basepaths and could easily get on base.

The 1979 National League All-Star squad included Lacy when he was a player with the Pirates. He was an offensive and defensive rock for the Pirates that year and his contributions were crucial to their World Series victory.
